Ready to go Our bikes waiting the start of the ride in Justin's mom's front yard. Date/Time: Sat 29 Sep 2007 07:17:13 AM MST Lance, Justin and I stayed at Justin's mom's house since she lives only six miles from the start of the ride. I brought the bikes out and laid them out while we were getting all of our stuff together.
Start of the ride Justin, Dave, and Mike at the start Date/Time: Sat 29 Sep 2007 08:04:07 AM MST Justin, Dave, and Mike (from left to right) at the start of the ride. As you can see, we had perfect weather, all weekend long.
Mike Mike is all ready to go Date/Time: Sat 29 Sep 2007 08:04:21 AM MST Mike waiting with his bike. He had a little scare when one of his shifters stopped working the week before the ride. Thankfully, his local Bike Line managed to get him back together for the ride.
Fletcher Fletcher's just about ready to go. Date/Time: Sat 29 Sep 2007 08:04:48 AM MST Spray on some SPF, and let's go. Fletcher got a little impatient, calling me four times as we rode over from JB's mom's house. Can't imagine what he'd be like after a first date!!
Lance and Dave Lance arrives after dropping off his bags. Date/Time: Sat 29 Sep 2007 08:05:30 AM MST Dave's all ready to go on his new bike, and Lance is just about ready.
Sag wagon The view from the sag wagon... what I thought I would see all Saturday. Date/Time: Sat 29 Sep 2007 10:16:12 AM MST In the weeks before the ride, I rebuilt a wheel for Lance. I wound up riding on the rebuilt wheel, and as I rode up a slight incline, I shifted and heard a sharp "ping" which wasn't what I was expecting for a shift. I commented on how loud the shift was, then realized that the bike was pulsing. I rolled to a stop, realizing that I had broken a spoke. Turns out it wasn't a spoke that broke, but the hub flange -- the same exact failure Lance had seen -- definitely a bad hub design!
I hopped in the sag wagon, driven by Ed (great guy!) and found out we were only 2 miles from the lunch stop, where Ed from D&Q in Cherry Hill hooked me up with a spare wheel. (I owe the second half of Saturday to two Eds!) Need any bike or sports supplies? Keep D&Q in mind!
Justin and a surprise Over-the-shoulder shot of Justin on my wheel... and a surprise... Date/Time: Sat 29 Sep 2007 11:34:37 AM MST I pointed the camera over my shoulder and managed to get this picture of Justin on my wheel. Just behind him is the head of a line of guys we had recently passed. Directly over his left shoulder is Luis, the locomotive of the freight train. We wound up riding with these guys (from Team Journey) on both days, and made some good friends.
Luis!! Do what you do!!! Getting passed by the freight train Date/Time: Sat 29 Sep 2007 11:34:51 AM MST Luis from Team Journey pulls his line past us. This picture was actually an accident, but I thought it turned out well.
As we were riding along, if we came to a clear section of road, Sean would yell out "Luis!!! Do what you do!!!". Luis was pulling the train, and was very strong.
Fletcher Fletcher sitting on my wheel Date/Time: Sat 29 Sep 2007 01:21:37 PM MST Another blind shot, this time with Fletcher on my wheel.
Ride the dolphins Fletcher rides the dolphins in our rental house. Date/Time: Sat 29 Sep 2007 09:24:12 PM MST Our rental house had this utterly hideous coffee table... two dolphins molded from metal, and a glass top resting on the head of one and the tail of the other. Justin had the great idea to pull off the glass top, and told Fletcher to ride the dolphins.
Lance rides the dolphins Believe it or not, there wasn't THAT much beer involved in this. Date/Time: Sat 29 Sep 2007 09:24:43 PM MST After Fletcher rode the dolphins, Lance decided to have a go.
